Write emails by voice on your Mac
Talking is usually several times faster than typing, and it's often easier to say what you mean. With WhisperWrite, free to use on your Mac, you hold a key, speak your email, and it's typed into Mail, Gmail or Outlook with punctuation and without the ums.
Dictate an email in five steps
- Download WhisperWrite (it's free) and allow Microphone and Accessibility when it asks.
- Open a new email in Mail, Gmail, Outlook or any other email app, and click in the message body.
- Hold Right Option and say what you want to write. Let go when you're done.
- Say "new paragraph" between paragraphs. Click the Subject field and dictate that too.
- Read it over, fix anything you like, and send.
Tips for clean, ready-to-send emails
- Long email? Go hands-free. Tap the key once to start and again to finish, so you don't have to hold it. Each dictation can run up to six minutes.
- Spell names right. Add colleagues, clients and product names to the dictionary once, and WhisperWrite gets them right every time.
- Use snippets for things you repeat. Set "my email" or "my address" to type the full text, so you never spell it out.
- Let AI match the tone (optional). With AI Edit on and your own Anthropic key, Claude fixes grammar, applies "actually, I meant…" corrections and matches the tone of the app you're in.
- Rewrite a draft by voice. Select it, hold the Command Mode shortcut (set it up on the AI Edit page, with your Anthropic key) and say "make this more polite" or "shorten this".
- Pasted in the wrong place? Press Control-Command-V to paste your last dictation again where your cursor is now.
Works with your email app
WhisperWrite types wherever your cursor is, so it works with Apple Mail, Gmail and Outlook in your browser, Outlook for Mac, and other email apps. It also works in Slack, Teams, Notes, Google Docs and anywhere else you type.
