Dictate prompts to ChatGPT, Claude and Cursor
Good prompts are long: the context, what you've tried, what a good answer looks like. Typing all that is slow, so people cut corners. Saying it is quick. With WhisperWrite, free to use on your Mac, you hold a key, explain what you need, and the prompt is typed into whichever AI app you're using.
How to dictate a prompt
- Click the message box in ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, VS Code or your terminal.
- Hold Right Option and talk through what you need, the way you'd explain it to a colleague.
- Let go. The prompt is typed in about 0.1 seconds.
- Read it over, then press Return to send.
Tips for better spoken prompts
- Give the background first. Say what you're working on, what you've tried and what went wrong, then what you want.
- Use "new line" for structure. Line breaks go into the text, so nothing is sent before you're ready.
- Teach it your jargon. Add library names, product names and acronyms to the dictionary so they're spelled right every time.
- Go hands-free for long prompts. Tap the key to start and again to finish, up to six minutes at a time.
- Reuse what you repeat. Snippets turn a short phrase into text you use often, such as your coding conventions or a role description.
Works wherever you prompt
WhisperWrite types into any app with a text cursor: the ChatGPT and Claude apps and websites, Gemini and Perplexity in your browser, Cursor and VS Code, Terminal, and chat tools like Slack. With the default on-device engine, your speech is turned into text on your Mac, so what you say isn't sent anywhere until you send the prompt.

Questions
Does it work in the ChatGPT and Claude desktop apps?
Yes. WhisperWrite types into any text field on your Mac, so it works in the ChatGPT and Claude apps, in their websites, and in editors like Cursor and VS Code.
Will saying "new line" send my message early?
No. WhisperWrite turns "new line" and "new paragraph" into line breaks inside the text and pastes the whole prompt at once, so nothing is sent until you press Return yourself.
Should I turn on AI Edit for prompts?
Usually not. For prompts, your exact words are often what you want. AI Edit is off by default; WhisperWrite still adds punctuation and removes filler words.
Is it free?
Yes. WhisperWrite is free to use, with no word limits and no subscription. It runs on Macs with Apple Silicon and works in English for now.
Write by talking, free.
Hold a key, speak, and your words appear in any app. No word limits, no subscription, no account. Speech recognition runs on your Mac.
