About these terms

These terms cover WhisperWrite, the dictation app for Mac from Infugin Technologies ("we" or "us"), and this website. They apply to both the direct download and the Mac App Store edition. If you get WhisperWrite from the Mac App Store, the App Store's terms also apply.

By downloading or using WhisperWrite, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use it.

Our Privacy Policy explains how WhisperWrite handles your data.

Your licence

WhisperWrite is free. We give you a non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use it on Macs you own or control, for personal or business use.

We keep all rights in WhisperWrite that these terms don't give you. Some parts, like the speech model the app downloads, come from third parties and have their own licences.

What you dictate is yours. We don't claim any rights in it.

If you break these terms, this licence ends and you must stop using WhisperWrite.

Acceptable use

Please use WhisperWrite responsibly. Don't:

  • Use it for anything illegal, or to harm, harass or deceive anyone.
  • Use it to record or transcribe other people without their permission where the law requires it.
  • Sell, rent or redistribute the app. Share a link to this website instead.
  • Copy, modify, reverse-engineer or decompile it, except where the law allows.
  • Tamper with its code signature or get around its security features.

Third-party services

WhisperWrite's core dictation runs on your Mac. Some optional features use another company's service, through your own account with that company. They're off unless you turn them on:

  • Anthropic's Claude API, for AI Edit and Command Mode.
  • OpenAI's API, for the OpenAI speech engine, when you choose it on the Speech Model page.

That company's terms and policies apply when you use its service, and it bills you directly. We don't control these services, so we can't promise they'll be available, accurate or priced the same in future.

AI Edit and Command Mode

AI Edit and Command Mode are optional and off by default. They send text to Anthropic's Claude API using your own Anthropic API key.

When you use them, you're using Anthropic's service through your own Anthropic account. Anthropic's terms and policies apply to that use, and Anthropic bills you directly.

You're responsible for your API key and for any charges on your Anthropic account.

We don't control Anthropic's service, so we can't promise it will be available or that its results will be accurate. Check AI-edited text before you rely on it.

OpenAI speech engine

The OpenAI speech engine is optional and off by default. When you choose it, WhisperWrite sends your recordings to OpenAI's API to be transcribed, using your own OpenAI API key.

When you use it, you're using OpenAI's service through your own OpenAI account. OpenAI's terms and policies apply to that use, and OpenAI bills you directly.

You're responsible for your API key, for any charges on your OpenAI account, and for having the right to send what you dictate to OpenAI.

We don't control OpenAI's service, so we can't promise it will be available or that its transcripts will be accurate.

Updates

WhisperWrite checks for updates and tells you when a new version is available. Updates may fix problems, change features or add new ones.

New versions of the direct download are posted on this website, and the app can download and install them for you when you choose Update Now. The App Store edition is updated through the Mac App Store.

Some updates may be required. If a version is marked as required, older versions show an update prompt that can't be postponed, and dictation pauses until you update.

We want to keep improving WhisperWrite, but we can't promise future updates, support, or that any feature will stay available.

Disclaimer and liability

WhisperWrite is provided free and "as is", without warranties of any kind, as far as the law allows. We don't promise that it will be error-free, always available or right for your needs.

Speech recognition, on your Mac or through OpenAI, and AI Edit can make mistakes. Please check important text before you send it or rely on it.

As far as the law allows, Infugin Technologies isn't liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for any loss of data, profits or business, arising from your use of WhisperWrite or this website. Where our liability can't be excluded, it's limited to the amount you paid for WhisperWrite, if any.

Nothing in these terms takes away rights you have under consumer law that can't be limited by contract.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the place where Infugin Technologies is registered. If you're a consumer, you also keep any protections that the law where you live gives you.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. When we do, we'll post the new version on this page and update the date at the top.

If you keep using WhisperWrite after a change, the updated terms apply.
