Summary

By default, speech recognition runs on your Mac. With this on-device engine, your audio is never saved or sent anywhere.
The OpenAI speech engine is optional and off by default. If you choose it and add your own OpenAI API key, each recording is sent to OpenAI to be transcribed.
There's no account, no advertising and no crash reporting.
Your history, dictionary and settings are stored only on your Mac.
The app checks for updates and shares basic install statistics. You can turn the statistics off.
This website counts downloads. For each one, it records the time, your IP address and country, your browser and the site that sent you.
AI Edit is optional and off by default. It sends text, never audio, to Anthropic using your own API key.

About this policy

This policy explains how WhisperWrite handles your information. WhisperWrite is a dictation app for Mac, published by Infugin Technologies ("we" or "us").

There are two editions: the direct download from this website, and a Mac App Store edition, which is in preparation. Both follow the same privacy practices. Where they work differently, we say so.

This policy also covers this website.

On-device speech recognition (the default)

By default, speech recognition runs entirely on your Mac, using the Parakeet speech model through Apple's Core ML.

With this on-device engine, your audio is processed in memory while you dictate. It isn't saved to disk, and it isn't sent anywhere.

If you choose the optional OpenAI speech engine instead, your recordings are sent to OpenAI, as explained below.

WhisperWrite only uses the microphone while you're dictating: while you hold the shortcut, or in hands-free mode until you finish.

What's stored on your Mac

WhisperWrite keeps these only on your Mac:

  • Dictation history: the text, the time, the app you dictated into and how long you spoke.
  • Usage stats: words dictated, speaking speed and your day streak.
  • Your dictionary words and snippets.
  • Your settings.

In the direct download, they're in ~/Library/Application Support/WhisperWrite and the app's preferences. In the App Store edition, they're inside the app's sandbox container.

We never receive any of this. If you turn on AI Edit, or choose the OpenAI speech engine, some of it is sent to Anthropic or OpenAI, as explained below.

Update checks and install statistics

When WhisperWrite opens, and about every 6 hours while it runs, it contacts our server to check for a newer version. Our server is hosted on Supabase. With that request, the app sends:

  • A random install ID, created the first time you open the app. It isn't tied to your name, email address or Apple ID.
  • The app version and build.
  • The edition: direct download or Mac App Store.
  • Your macOS version.

Our server records the install ID and these details, the time of the first and latest check, your IP address, and the country looked up from your IP address. The lookup uses an IP location service, country.is.

We use this to count installs, to see which versions are in use and where, and to tell the app when an update is available or required. If a version is marked as required, older versions show an update prompt that can't be postponed, and dictation pauses until you update.

The update check never sends audio, dictated text, your dictionary, your history or anything you type.

You can turn off "Share install statistics" in Settings › General. The app then checks for updates without sending an install ID, and our server doesn't store the request. Supabase's standard request logs may still briefly hold the IP address of each update check.

Install records are kept while the app is in use, and deleted after 24 months without a check. To have your record deleted sooner, email rakesh@infugin.com with your install ID, which is shown in Settings › About.

Speech model download

For on-device speech recognition, WhisperWrite downloads its speech model files (about 610 MB) from Hugging Face (huggingface.co) when you set it up. If you add custom words, it also downloads an optional custom-word model (about 90 MB).

Like any download, Hugging Face receives the request and your IP address. Nothing about you or your dictation is sent.

OpenAI speech engine

WhisperWrite can use OpenAI's speech-to-text API instead of the on-device engine. This is optional and off by default. It only works after you choose OpenAI on the Speech Model page, confirm that your recordings will be sent to OpenAI, and add your own OpenAI API key.

When it's on, each time you dictate, WhisperWrite sends the following over HTTPS, directly from your Mac to OpenAI's API (api.openai.com):

  • The audio of that dictation.
  • Your dictation language.
  • Your custom dictionary words, as spelling hints.
  • The name of the OpenAI transcription model you picked.

OpenAI sends back the text. Your recording is held in memory and isn't saved to disk on your Mac. It goes straight to OpenAI, and we never receive it.

This is processed under your own OpenAI account, under OpenAI's terms and policies, and OpenAI bills you for it. OpenAI's API data controls say that data sent to its API isn't used to train its models unless you opt in, and that audio sent for transcription isn't kept for abuse monitoring or stored as application state. OpenAI's policies and your OpenAI account settings decide how it's handled, and they can change.

If a request to OpenAI fails and the on-device engine is downloaded, WhisperWrite transcribes that recording on your Mac instead, and tells you.

Your OpenAI API key is kept in the macOS Keychain on your Mac and is sent only to OpenAI: with each dictation, and once when you save it, so WhisperWrite can check that OpenAI accepts it. You can switch back to the on-device engine, or remove your key, at any time on the Speech Model page.

AI Edit and Command Mode

AI Edit and Command Mode are optional and off by default. They only work after you add your own Anthropic API key.

When they're on, WhisperWrite sends the following over HTTPS, directly from your Mac to Anthropic's Claude API (api.anthropic.com):

  • The transcribed text of each dictation. Never your audio.
  • For Command Mode, your spoken instruction and the text you selected (direct download) or copied (App Store edition).
  • The name and bundle identifier of the app you're typing into.
  • Your custom dictionary words.
  • Your chosen writing style.

This is processed under your own Anthropic account, under Anthropic's terms and privacy policy. Anthropic may keep API data for a limited time under its policies. We don't receive or store any of it.

Your API key is kept in the macOS Keychain on your Mac. You can turn AI Edit off, or remove your key, at any time on the AI Edit page.

Permissions and clipboard

  • Microphone (both editions) lets WhisperWrite hear you while you dictate.
  • Accessibility (direct download only) lets WhisperWrite notice your shortcut and paste into the app you're using. To add a space when needed, it reads the character just before your cursor. Command Mode reads the text you've selected.

What Accessibility reads is used on your Mac, and isn't stored or sent anywhere. The one exception is Command Mode, which sends the selected text to Anthropic when you use it with your key.

The direct download pastes through the clipboard. By default, it then puts back what you had copied before.

The App Store edition doesn't use Accessibility. It puts your text on the clipboard for you to paste, and leaves it there.

You can change these permissions at any time in System Settings › Privacy & Security.

What we don't do

  • There's no account to create.
  • There's no advertising, and the app doesn't track you across other apps or websites.
  • There's no crash reporting.
  • We never receive your audio or anything you dictate, whichever speech engine you use.
  • We don't sell your data, and we only share it with the service providers named below.

This website

This website is hosted by Lovable, on Cloudflare. Our hosting providers keep standard request logs. Downloading WhisperWrite from this site is a normal request too.

The site uses the Inter font from Google Fonts. Your browser requests it from Google, which receives your IP address.

Lovable adds a small analytics script to every page. When you open a page, it sends the page address, the page that linked you here, your browser's user agent (which shows your browser and operating system), your preferred language and a country estimated from your device's time zone. This goes to an analytics address on this site, run by Lovable. It gives us simple visitor statistics, like page views and where visitors come from.

The script stores a random session ID in a cookie called "session-id". It expires 30 minutes after your last page view. Cloudflare may also set a short-lived security cookie ("__cf_bm") to tell people from bots.

When you open the download page, or press "Download again", your browser sends a note that a download started to our Lovable Cloud database (run on Supabase). The record holds the time, your IP address, your country (from Cloudflare, which sits in front of that database), your browser's user agent, and where you came from: the referring website's address (just the site, like example.com) or the campaign tag in the link. Visits from the app's Update button are recorded as updates, not new downloads. We use this to count downloads. Records are kept for up to 24 months. To have yours deleted sooner, email rakesh@infugin.com.

To count each download only once, and to remember which site or campaign link brought you here, the site keeps two small entries in your browser's session storage ("ww-download-recorded" and "ww-entry-source"). They're deleted when you close the tab.

We don't use advertising cookies.

Service providers

These companies help run WhisperWrite and this website:

  • Supabase (through Lovable Cloud) hosts our update server and database, and stores install and download records.
  • country.is receives your IP address so our server can look up your country for install statistics.
  • Hugging Face hosts the speech model files the app downloads.
  • OpenAI transcribes your recordings, only if you choose the OpenAI speech engine with your own key.
  • Anthropic processes text for AI Edit and Command Mode, only if you turn them on with your own key.
  • Lovable and Cloudflare host this website and its visitor statistics.
  • Google Fonts serves this website's font.

Your choices

  • Switch history off with the "Save history" toggle. Delete single items, or everything with Clear All, on the History page.
  • Turn off "Share install statistics" in Settings › General.
  • Ask us to delete your install record: email rakesh@infugin.com with your install ID from Settings › About.
  • Ask us to delete your download records: email rakesh@infugin.com.
  • Turn AI Edit off, or remove your Anthropic API key, on the AI Edit page.
  • Switch back to the on-device speech engine, or remove your OpenAI API key, on the Speech Model page.
  • Change Microphone and Accessibility access in System Settings › Privacy & Security.

To remove everything from your Mac, remove any API keys you added, on the AI Edit and Speech Model pages, then delete the app and the files listed above. Your install record on our server is deleted after 24 months without a check, or sooner if you ask.

Children

WhisperWrite isn't directed at children under 13. The app doesn't ask for a name, email address or any account details, and the only data it sends us is the update check and install statistics described above.
